The Colts' recent signings puts a veteran's roster spot in danger
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

The 2024 NFL Draft has ended, and the Indianapolis Colts selected nine players.

They have begun signing undrafted free agents to round out their 2024 NFL Draft class.

One position, in particular, has had two notable players added that puts a Colts veteran's roster spot on watch.

Two of the Colts' first announced undrafted free-agent signings were QBs. The team signed former BYU, Pittsburgh, and USC QB Kedon Slovis and former North Texas and Kansas QB Jason Bean.

This gives the Colts five QBs on the roster for training camp if both Slovis and Bean can make it through the team's rookie minicamp without being released. And I don't find it a coincidence that both of these QBs have above-average speed, with Bean's mobility being evident on his tape with 904 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns over the past three years at Kansas and him recording an impressive 4.55 40-yard dash at his Pro Day.

Slovis, on the other hand, didn't have a season with positive rushing yards during his five-year college career and didn't score a rushing touchdown until last season, when he scored three. So when it came time for Slovis to run his 40 at the 2024 Scouting Combine, nobody expected anything special. So when the official time came in, and he recorded the fastest 40 (4.55) and 10-yard split (1.57) of any QB at the combine, many were shocked.

The Colts' top two QBs are pretty set in stone: second-year Anthony Richardson is the team's starter, and veteran Joe Flacco is the backup. The emergency situation QB 3 job before these signings also seemed to be locked up for veteran Sam Ehlinger, but now, a competition could be brewing. And with the Colts choosing to add two speedy options, I think it's fair to assume they like the idea of developing a young mobile QB to be the eventual primary backup to Richardson long term. Slovis is extra intriguing because his best collegiate season came his freshman year at USC, where he three career highs with 3,502 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2019. That season was also Colts star WR Michael Pittman's best and final collegiate season, with him recording 101 catches, 1,275 yards, and 11 touchdowns.
